Meaning of the Basant Jaishi

Denotatively, Basant Jaishi incorporates two meanings; Basant refers to name (proper noun) and Jaishi refers to cast or surname of Brahman in Nepali cast system. ‘Basant’ is derived from Sanskrit word ‘рд╡рд╕рди्рдд’ or ‘Wasant’ which means name of a season between third week of March to second week of May of the year, i.e., Chaitra and Vaishakh of Nepali Vikram Samvat calendar. The Basant is also similar meaning of spring season. In written script, Basant, Basanta, Wasanta, Vasanta and Vasant can be found as spelling. But these terms have no difference in meaning. Jaishi is common name used by Brahman people of the Nepal. Jaishi means one class of two main Brahman class and fortune teller which includes many casts like Ghodasaine, Neupane, Sharma, Upadhyaya, etc. In written context, Jaisi, Jaishi, Joshi and Josi can be seen. As per Nepali spelling grammar, Jaishi is more correct due to practice of writing fat /sh/ or [рд╢] in cast. Therefore, Basant Jaishi denotes to the first season of year and Jaishi refers to common surname, used by Brahman in Nepal respectively.
